Ship Arrest Boom

Ship Arrest Boom

A ship retainer system was designed, and built upstream of the recently constructed A30 bridge at Beauharnois, Quebec.

In the event that a ship veers off course from the navigation channel nearby, the boom is designed to absorb its energy eventually stopping the ship, at an initial speed of 3.5 knots. Studies were conducted to ensure a 1:10,000 risk of a ship collision event with the boom in place.

A robust anchoring system with nylon rope fuses was designed in order to absorb the energy of the ship in the event of a collision. In order for the ship retainer boom not to interfere with the existing ice booms upstream, the boom was designed to allow the ice to pass in between the pontoons, and at the same time to resist the ice during the ice formation and breakup.
